Situated in Agra and overshadowed by the Taj Mahal, are the finest Mughal forts on the banks of the Yamuna River and on the west bank of the Jumna River in India. The Jumna River itself is a mere 2 kilometers upstream from the great Taj Mahal.In the state of Uttar Pradesh, the Agra Fort is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, merely 2.5 kilometers northwest of the world famous Taj Mahal. The great Mughal Emperor, Akbar built the fort of sandstone between 1565 and 1573. The fort itself can be accurately descried as a walled city. Akbar was the grandfather of Shah Jahan, the builder of the marbled Taj Mahal, which is inside the fort itself.
